History of Susquehanna Valley Tres Dias
Susquehanna Valley Tres Dias (SVTD) grew out of the Mid-Hudson and the South-Hudson Tres Dias communities. We formed an executive committee and went through all the proper channels to receive the charter to begin the work of starting a new community. SVTD received their charter in April 1985. At this time there were only 30 Pescadores (a term indicating a person who has attended their original Tres Dias weekend). That was not enough to hold our own weekends, so we continued to serve on teams and send candidates (those attending their original weekend) to New York for their Tres Dias weekends.
Once our numbers grew we were able to host our own weekends. The first SVTD weekends were held in November and December of 1988 at Mount Zion Retreat Center in Roaring Branch north of Williamsport. SVTD recruited 2 spiritual directors, assistant rectors and music directors from other communities for their first weekends. In the summer following the first weekends SVTD held a Tres Dias school with the team from Mid-Hudson providing the training.
In the beginning only one weekend a year was held in the Fall, but it was soon realized that a Spring weekend was needed. We held 5-6 weekends at Mount Zion and then moved the location to Muncy Terraces until weekend #13 at which time the location was moved to the Little League building in South Williamsport.
Pescadores served on team as other communities were getting started. Those communities were in North Carolina, the Emmaus community in the Susquehanna Valley, Cumberland Valley Tres Dias and Lehigh Valley Tres Dias. We were also able to send one of our Pescadores to the Ukraine to help get a community started there.
In July 1999 we had the privilege of hosting the International Tres Dias, which consisted of representatives from all the secretariats.
Weekends are now held at St. Cyril’s Academy in Danville.
